The month of March is also known as Colon Cancer Awareness Month, which is one of the most common forms of cancer in the U.S.
It is estimated that nearly 50,000 people will die from colon cancer.
Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths for both men and women in the U.S.
Health experts say early detection of the cancer is the key to surviving the condition.
Symptoms of needing a colonoscopy include, abdominal pain, bleeding, weight loss, and changes in intestinal habits.
Elsa Canales says she is trying to educate patients that the symptoms come late and it is good to get checked to detect polyps.
Polyps are lesions that take seven to ten years to develop into cancer.
Canales says that even if you do not feel any symptoms, it is still important to get checked.
If you and your family are interested, there is a Colon Cancer Awareness event that will be happening at Mall Del Norte on March 10th.
The event is free and open to the public.
